It steals definition and flattens everything it touches. Unfortunately, this is the exact time of day I was passing by the Painted Desert on my way from Albuquerque to Flagstaff last week. I wasn't expecting much in the way of photos, but I made a last-minute decision to get off of the highway and take the 28-mile detour, if only to break up the drive a bit. When I pulled up at the first viewpoint, I saw exactly what I expected: a very unique landscape that would have been truly stunning had I only been there 6 hours earlier or later. I was about to get back in my car when the clouds rolled in. They were large and puffy, and most importantly, they were moving. Their shadows mixed with the sunlight and added dimension to the alternating ridges. I spent the next two hours exposing for the highlights and was pleasantly surprised with the results. The Baltics https://www.gregbryanphotography.com/blog/2014/9/the-baltics Soviet remnants are scattered throughout the cities, lakes, national parks and beaches of the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Abandoned prisons, communist-era architecture and crumbling buildings have become home to many a stork's nest. While the three countries differ in language and currency (though Latvia switched to the Euro in early 2014), they share the same history of occupation. This is where the Singing Revolution that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union began. The capital cities of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius all have bustling historic old towns, but friendly locals are happy to show you some of the more hidden sights. For more images from the Baltics and other Eastern European countries, click here.

Maha Kumbh Mela - Allahabad, India. https://www.gregbryanphotography.com/blog/2014/9/maha-kumbh-mela The Ganges River is a sacred destination for the Hindu faithful. An estimated 100 million devotees made the pilgrimage to Allahabad to take part in ritual bathing during the 55-day Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013. This is where I found myself less than a week after arriving in India. More accurately, it's where I lost myself. Disappearing into the masses was easily achieved whether intentional or not. People were everywhere, filling the streets and lining the river banks. Floating bridges were brought in to ease access between the campsites and bathing areas. It was truly amazing to experience one of the largest gatherings of people in the world. You can see more images from my other travels around India here. A Year in the Grand Canyon https://www.gregbryanphotography.com/blog/2014/9/a-year-in-the-grand-canyon The small number of people who actually make the hike all the way down to Phantom Ranch in the bottom of the Grand Canyon typically only get to experience it for a few days at most. Often, it's down one day, and back up the next. I was fortunate enough to spend just over a year working and living there, which allowed me the opportunity to witness one of the country's most impressive national parks change through all four seasons. From monsoon storms in summer to bright cactus flowers in spring to yellow cottonwood leaves in autumn, these are a few of my favorite images. See the rest and choose yours here
